With horse racing in Hong Kong from 1841 (courtesy of the British) this, the Happy Valley racecourse, was once a malarial ridden swamp which happened to be flat ! Typically, under the British, it had strict membership rules, with no women or others from "unsuitable" backgrounds allowed, and no Chinese members until the 20th century !! Now, The Jockey Club, is not only the oldest establishment in Hong Kong, but also the largest taxpayer, contributing nearly 12% of the total revenue there ! This is because it has a legal monopoly on gambling, and the Chinese love to gamble ! There are still strict membership rules, but now the club operates huge charitable and community schemes.
