Galle is a major trading city in south west Sri Lanka. It's been occupied by many nations including the Arabs, Greeks, and the Romans. Eventually the Dutch came in and built the famous fort there, and stayed until the Portugese took over, followed by the British ! Many decades on, and there was major damage and thousands dead in the tsunami at the turn of this century. It's now a mended city, and the fort is a truly lovely place for a short stay in one of the boutique hotels. Oh, and there's a test cricket ground there too. And lastly, it has a very busy bus station !
