Though having no official religion, in fact Brazil has the largest Catholic population in the world, and one of the highest Christian populations.
The patron saint of Brazil is known as the "Black Madonna" or, Our Lady who Appeared, after being discovered by three fishermen.
With an ethnic mix of approximately half European, and half African or a mix of African and European, the evidence of mass slavery is clear to see still. Around 3.5 million slaves survived the Atlantic crossing to Brazil spanning 3 centuries. They were mainly working on the sugar plantations, and like most slaves, were treated horribly. I say this as there is (as you will see) still evidence of the period of slavery in some church icons I photographed.
